2 Saturday was all about the football. I didn’t make it back to my hotel after witnessing the tear gassing scenes at the Old Port in Marseille on Friday night. Instead, I stayed at the talkSPORT studio, temporarily housed in an apartment situated near the Old Port, and a 20 minute walk from the stadium. So I was woken early on Saturday by the voice of Joey Barton in the next room, co-hosting the breakfast show with Alan Brazil, who was in Paris. So I got up, and did the walk of shame back to my hotel, around 35-40 minutes away. Had a croissant on the way, and it was no different to what you’d get in England. Disappointing.Soon it was back to the studio to host the live coverage of the first two games of the day – Albania against Switzerland, and then Wales versus Slovakia. I must say, if you’ve not heard Danny Gabbidon on our commentaries, you’ve missed something special. It’s pure Welsh passion from the Cwmbran kid. I don’t really know Danny, but just listening to him is a joy. He nearly exploded on air when Bale’s free-kick went in.After my shift was done, I walked to the stadium among the England fans, and spirits were good, there was lots of singing – nothing offensive, not even any expletives. I saw one minor altercation when two Russians tried to get in the faces of some English fans, who reacted badly to it, but it was self-policed with other fans breaking up any problem before it even started. In the stadium I met up with my boss, Liam, and we watched the game together, sitting very close to Arsene Wenger, Gerard Houllier and a very moody looking former Villa striker, Savo Milosevic. Here’s my view of the game: first half England were excellent, playing some wonderful football. If Adam Lallana could finish he’d be the perfect player. His pressing is exemplary, his touch and technique as good as I’ve seen from any Englishman since Gazza (and don’t think I’m comparing him to Gazza, I’m not). Raheem Sterling was clean through, but no top level player should be taking three touches in that position, and to not get a shot away was rubbish from him.Russia started pressing in the second half and all of a sudden England lost control of the game, they failed to dominate as they had in the first half. And we seemed to have no answer. I wanted Jamie Vardy on to stretch the opposition, to be more dynamic. Lallana had gone quiet, Sterling had the ball but did nothing with it.Then we got a break, scoring from a free-kick, probably against the run of play, and with 20 minutes left, we should have seen the game out. What followed was amateur. Jack Wilshere coming on was a shrewd move, but why take Wayne Rooney off? He’s the captain, the leader and the players look up to him. And he’d been playing well. Adrian Durham will be bringing you the latest from France every day 2 Full-backs carried on bombing forward, leaving gaps, and tiring themselves out unnecessarily. Only two of the three subs were used which was ridiculous. And James Milner came on to do a job on the left, but defensively he was a headless chicken, over-committing when closing down, meaning a drop of the shoulder from a Russian left him with time and space on the ball. Poor from some England players, and poor game management second half.I’ve been talking Wales up as a team this week, saying they have something England don’t have that might make up for the fact – and it is a fact – that the Welsh 23 are mostly inferior players to the England 23. That is spirit and commitment. So while Ben Davies bust every sinew to clear off the line for Wales, not one English player did that for the Russian equaliser. Instead they appealed for offside, which it wasn’t. Very disappointing.Away to my right at full time, Russian fans charged at the English, who tried to run out of the stadium, but found that more Russians were charging them from the concourse. It was disturbing to watch. A pincer movement from the Russians, and English fans couldn’t get away. Segregation was poor, stewarding was even worse, policing in the stadium was non-existent. Just a few minutes earlier on the big screen the Russians had been told to stay in the seats at full time. What a joke, so naïve.I walked back to the hotel and crashed out. Our flight back to Paris was cancelled so ‘IMO’ the producer has switched us to the train. Good man…. although I wasn’t saying that earlier in the day when he tried to jump in a cab that wasn’t ours, and managed to annoy some England fans, who weren’t best pleased.
The Community Shield is the weekend football highlight – although the beginning of the new domestic season has been overshadowed by a quite magnificent Olympic Games.Over the next three weeks I’ll look at each of the three local teams’ chances for the forthcoming season as well as previewing that weekend’s fixtures. I’ll start with Chelsea. The Champions League and FA Cup holders are 11/5 outsiders to win the Wembley curtain-raiser in 90 minutes, with Premier League winners Manchester City the 13/10 favourites with the draw at 12/5.It promises to be an intriguing match and one which will give us an insight into how manager Roberto Di Matteo sees his starting XI for next weekend’s trip to Wigan. I think the 11/5 is too big for Chelsea despite their surprise 3-1 reverse at Brighton last weekend.Chelses boss Di Matteo has every reason to be optimistic. The Blues are 9/2 to wrestle back the title with Manchester United 13/5 and City even-money to win it again.Correct me if I am wrong but they only nicked the title in extra time against 10-man QPR, who knew they were safe. Some of the odds suggest they won at a canter. We have any number of Blues specials at BetVictor and a few that caught my eye included:Top London club: 8/13 (certainties)Season match bets (handicap):Chelsea – 4.5 points v Arsenal EvensChelsea +3.5 points v United 4/5Chelsea + 6.5 points v City 4/5Chelsea – 9.5 points v Spurs EvensWe have a season-long handicap on the Premier League, offering 15/1 for every club with Manchester City scratch and the rest having a handicap:Thus PL Handicap 2012/13; EW ¼ First 4 and ALL Clubs at 15/1; handicaps include:Man City ScratchUnited +3Chelsea +6Arsenal +10Spurs +15Liverpool +16Fulham +33QPR +37Other Blues specials:To go through the 2012/13 league season undefeated: 250/1To be undefeated in the league at Stamford Bridge: 20/1To be undefeated away from home in the league: 66/1What will Chelsea win? The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announced that the fossils werediscovered in rock debris during construction work on the Eastern Cape N2 highway, close to Grahamstown.Treasure trove of fossils unearthed by roadworks near Grahamstown https://t.co/CDuLQsWeJr #palaeontologyvia @News24 pic.twitter.com/aoS2rpXKDM— NRFSouth Africa (@NRF_News) June 1,2016Uncovered during controlled rock cutting explosions, the find, including preserved plant fossils and a number of new invertebrates, has now been quickly excavated for further analysis, according to Sanral environmental manager Mpati Makoa.“To advance scientific discourse and original research contributions of South African palaeontology and heritage scholars, we made provision in the environmentalmanagement programme for specialist examination and excavation of rock debris,”Makoa told News24.The specimens were examined by palaeontologist Dr Robert Gess of Grahamstown’s Albany Museum, an environmental consultant for Sanral. Gess called the discovery “substantial” because many of the species “have not yet been documented by palaeontologists”.The fossils also include examples of marine life dating back 360-million years, a period known as the Devonian era, when South Africa – and Africa – was joined with South America, Australia and Antarctica to form the Gondwana supercontinent.Gess said the plant and invertebrate fossil discoveries were from an ancient river mouth ecosystem. This environment made them distinct from fossil specimens discovered in 2013 at the nearby closed lagoon ecosystem of Waterloo Farm.“The discovery is significant as paleontological research and scholarship on marineecosystems of the Devonian period was primarily anchored in the fossil discoveries of Waterloo Farm,” he said. “Now, we are able to trace a much broader picture of life along an ancient coastline through the discovery of new plant and invertebrate species.”The N2 discoveries include a shrub sized Iridopterid plant, a number of lycopods and Zosterophylopsid plants. More significant is the complete specimen of an Archaeopteris notosaria tree was also collected, which Gess calls “the best preserved fertile material of this ancient tree” on record.Among the newly discovered marine invertebrate fossils is a new species of bivalve or mud clams. It is vastly different from those previously discovered at Waterloo Farm, a mere 20 kilometres away, and may provide some answers about the prehistory of the area.Gess said cooperation between the roads agency and the palaeontology community has a long history in uncovering fossil-rich areas.Infrastructure development since the late 1980s had significantly shaped South African palaeontology research and studies, he said. This has “enabled discovery of the clues to virtually everything we know about high latitude latest Devonian life, not just in South Africa, but in the world”.The new find, and previous discoveries at Waterloo Farm, make the area an important global palaeontological hub.Steven Robertson, Sanral’s project manager on the N2 Grahamstown to Fish River, said preservation and public education were now a priority. “When we first met Dr Gess and he explained significant fossil finds, we thought how can we best preserve and allow public access to this to ensure it becomes general knowledge of what was in this area millions and millions of years ago?” he saidTo promote the discoveries and the region in general, Sanral is planning to incorporate an observation area in the completion of the N2 project. The roads agency, Robertson said, is converting the road design to accommodate a rest area that can be used as a picnic area. “We will be including information boards and displays on the significance of the fossils, their age how they fit into the evolutionary history of earth.”Source: News24

What’s unusual about the 2018 Kentucky Derby is the sameness of the breeding. When the race kicks off at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, the 20-horse field1We’re considering only the 20 horses that have a guaranteed spot in Saturday’s race. One additional horse was granted alternate status in case another horse scratches, but the alternate was not counted in this analysis. will feature nine runners who were sired by just three stallions, which means 45 percent of the runners will be competing against what humans might consider a half-brother. And that’s the third-highest percentage in the 94 Kentucky Derbys for which horseracingnation.com has sire data on all the competitors.Leading the family business this year is the stallion Scat Daddy, who sired four colts in the race: The morning-line favorite Justify (3-1) and the second-favorite Mendelssohn (5-1), as well as long shots Flameaway (30-1) and Combatant (50-1). To see how unusual it is for four half-siblings2In horse-racing parlance, two horses with the same sire are technically not considered “half-siblings,” a term reserved for two horses with the same mare. to enter the same Kentucky Derby, we looked at the sires of every Derby horse on record. Assuming none of his progeny scratch, this year Scat Daddy will tie Chicle as the most prolific derby sire for any one year.3Data gets spotty in the 19th century, so we may be missing some Victorian-era superstuds. (Chicle sired four racers in the 1923 Derby.)Scat Daddy isn’t the only stallion with multiple offspring in this year’s race. Three competitors were sired by Curlin: Vino Rosso (12-1), Good Magic (12-1) and Solomini (30-1). And just to keep it interesting, Bolt d’Oro (8-1) and Enticed (30-1) are both by the stallion Medaglia d’Oro.Scat Daddy died unexpectedly in 2015 at age 11, so this crop of 3-year-olds will be the second-to-last of his direct offspring to run for the roses. But Curlin, the two-time horse of the year, has a chance to enter the record books as a stallion. Overall, Curlin has already sired eight Derby contenders4Scat Daddy has sired seven. Again, assuming none of their offspring scratch from this year’s race. and he’s only 14, which means he may be able to keep breeding for another decade or so. According to our research, the record for fathering Derby runners is held by Black Toney, who sired 16, including Derby winners Black Gold and Brokers Tip. Curlin finished a respectable third, but went on to beat that year’s Derby winner, Street Sense, to win both the Breeders’ Cup and the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown. Scat Daddy had been a favorite at the betting windows before the 2007 Derby, but he finished a dismal 18th after suffering an injury. Why have these two returned so prominently, via their progeny, to the track? The answer lies both in talent and modern breeding practices. When thoroughbred racehorses shift to their second career as studs, it’s never a sure thing that they will produce high-quality foals. But as their progeny start showing promise, the stallions are held in higher regard, so breeders send in better and better mares, combining the most promising bloodlines in hopes of producing more competitive offspring.“Once a horse shows aptitude and ability, his commercial appeal increases,” said John Sikura, president of Hill ’n’ Dale, the Kentucky breeding farm where Curlin lives. Both Curlin and Scat Daddy attracted more interest from breeders as their progeny were increasingly successful. Curlin’s stud fee was set at $150,000 for the 2018 season, and Scat Daddy was also commanding six figures before his untimely death. The fact that Curlin and Scat Daddy have so many horses in the field is also a function of the modern approach to breeding: Keep ’em busy.Stallions today might “cover,” or breed with, more than 200 mares in a season, whereas the great sires of the past were breeding to a list, or book, of about 50 mares.“What you’re seeing is the ‘big book’ phenomenon,” said Jamie Hill, co-owner of McMahon and Hill Bloodstock agency. In 2014, when this year’s crop of Derby contenders was bred, Curlin bred with 152 mares and Scat Daddy covered 202, as reported to the Jockey Club. Of their more than 350 matings, seven progeny have made it to the 2018 Kentucky Derby, which only takes 20 horses every year.Shared parentage, though, is nothing in the big picture of breeding thoroughbred race horses. Look a few generations back, and they’re practically all related.Certain names crop up over and over in the pedigrees of this year’s Derby runners. Mr. Prospector, for example, shows up in every 2018 Derby runner’s lineage. 2Sir Gallahad III192013– Instilled Regard✓ Horsegreat-grandfathergreat-great-grandfathergreat-great-great-grandfather Bull Lea19355– Good Magic✓✓ Vino Rosso✓✓ Sickle19245– Enticed✓✓ 1Black Toney191116– Audible✓ Nasrullah19408– Show more rows*Sire data is incomplete for many of the early Derbies.Sources: Horse Racing Nation, Equineline.com Pulpit19946– ✓ Bravazo✓ Pharamond II19256– Royal Minstrel19255– Chicle19137– Halo19696– Justify✓✓ Smart Strike19926– Giant’s Causeway19978– Firenze Fire✓✓ Solomini✓ Unbridled19876– 9Curlin2004148– Distorted Humor1993257– Alibhai19385– Danzig19776– Nashua19527– Malibu Moon1997217– Broomstick190110– RKsirebornAge (if alive)Offspring in the derby Lone Sailor✓ Noble Indy✓✓ Bolt d’Oro Combatant✓✓✓ Unbridled’s Song19936– “He’s a dominant force. He was a sprinter, and he set a track record,” said Hill, adding that the horse’s widespread influence is even more impressive for the fact that Mr. Prospector was breeding in the era where studs covered 40 to 60 mares a year.Another major stallion, Northern Dancer, is widely represented. Scat Daddy, for example, had both Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector in his pedigree. And when Scat Daddy was paired with the mare Stage Magic, whose bloodline also traces back to Mr. Prospector, they produced the 2018 Derby favorite Justify. While breeders are concerned that too much inbreeding will create freakish horses, the right combination can make for horses that are freakishly brilliant, said Hill, whose family owned the 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. Can Justify get it done? He’s got history working both for and against him. Justify did not run as a 2-year-old, and the last horse to win the Kentucky Derby without running at age 2 was Apollo, more than 130 years ago in 1882. But Justify has been working with Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Derby four times.Scat Daddy also sired another morning-line favorite, Mendelssohn, who won the UAE Derby in Dubai by a huge margin — almost 19 lengths. He’s under the care of star trainer Aidan O’Brien.Among Curlin’s offspring, Vino Rosso won his last race, the Wood Memorial, and is trained by 2017 Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher. There’s also reason to like Good Magic, who won the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and is trained by rising star Chad Brown. They’ve all got about two minutes to make daddy proud.
